Nerding up life, theology, technology, and more

Broccoli

All evidence points to the fact that broccoli is cruel. So bad that she rejects the yoghurt peace offering.

Greek Folly

Gregory of Nazianzus, on Greek:

Why, every one knows that in practice we very often find tenses interchanged when time is spoken of; and especially is this the custom of Holy Scripture, not only in respect of the past tense, and of the present; but even of the future, as for instance “Why did the heathen rage?” when they had not yet raged and “they shall cross over the river on foot”, where the meaning is they did cross over. It would be a long task to reckon up all the expressions of this kind which students have noticed.

[Third Theological Oration (Oration XXIX.V)]

This was a guy who spoke Greek, talking about students who spoke Greek, who noticed Greek tense forms do funny things.

And here am I doing a research project on Greek tense forms, and why they do what they do (in particular cases).

Wish me luck, internet.

Nerd Greek

papyrus_66a.gifI happen to be doing a particularly nerdy subject at Bible college, to do with linguistic and exegetical issues in biblical Greek. Fun, but not your average person’s cup of tea.

This week I’m giving a seminar about various bits and pieces to do with translation issues in the Greek Jewish Bible. For those in the class, or just interested, there’s a seminar outline below:

Note for all seminar participants: if this whole seminar thing isn’t interesting enough, feel free to play bingo. Sure, it’s made for Issues in Theology, but it’ll fly (with a couple of obvious minor modifications).

Style with substance?

Perhaps.

I tried out a tool called Prezi for my Issues in Theology seminar yesterday. It’s an interesting concept-shift from linear slide-based tools such as powerpoint. One canvas to indicate overall structure, zoom & rotate, following a path through material… it was fun to make, at least.

My only concern is that for a relatively serious presentation the transitions could well be distracting. Click on the image below and let me know what you think.
