First Trip

4 10 2008

To celebrate the unseasonably warm weather, and to entertain the family staying with us, the first snorkelling trip of the season was had yesterday down at Clovelly.

Unfortunately the underwater camera is out to pasture at the moment, having leaked at some point in the past. Not a great amount of fish at the moment, bar a big school out in the deeper section, and a Port Jackson Shark snoozing on the floor.

Elissa made the most of it, having a bit of a kip on the towel back up with Mum.

My vastly-qualified grandfather has just published a book he’s co-edited. He sent me a copy today. Surprisingly it’s something I’m keen to have a look through (normally, the nitrogen cycle in agriculture doesn’t really do much for me). I’ve started on an article about the Tibetan plateau, and how it effects the atmosphere and the monsoon cycles. Interesting stuff.

Given that the articles within all concern the monsoon system of East Asia, the picture on the back cover is of a crowded street in Varanasi, India.

Taken by my dad, of me, on a rickshaw.

Compare and contrast to the original.

MA BSc CertTESOL

Kristy just graduated, making her the most qualified member of our family: she’s now a Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics, and now has lots of letters after her name should she choose to use them (cf. the title of this post).

She now ranks as the 3rd-most educated Freney ever (to my knowledge), after my mum Denise (MA DipEd BA) and grandfather John (DSc PhD MSc BSc). I’m not convinced any of us are going to top the DSc - that’s a Doctor of Science, an award that recognises a body of significant scientific contribution. It’s a big deal. All I’ve got is BE.

(My grandfather has written a bunch of obscure books on his speciality, agronomy (soil science; specifically, nitrogen and fertiliser use in soils related to rice paddys, etc). Because they’re so narrowly-focused, they print about 6 copies and sell them for $279 or $299. Wow.)

Nice work, Kristy. (Master Freney?)
